A Tent Maker’s Story

The really short version.

When I was 12 years old I heard God’s call on my life to ministry. When I turned 18, and a senior in high school, I started my youth ministry journey as I volunteered to be the youth leader to the few teenagers at our church. That changed my life as I spent the next 35 years actively involved in youth ministry.

In 2000, I was asked to be the youth pastor at Defiance Church of the Nazarene. However, a few years after I moved here, there were some financial challenges at the church and I realized I needed another way to financially support my ministry work, so in 2006, I earned my real estate license with the intent to open my own real estate brokerage. So, in 2009, I opened Realty Five of Defiance.

I now fondly call Realty Five my “mule”—it carries the financial burden so I can continue my ministry work. Like Paul, who made tents, I sell homes to support my family and call.

I eventually rejoined the church staff as the volunteer youth pastor and did that for several years. However, in December of 2022, my role at church changed from being the volunteer youth pastor to Co-Lead pastor.

Why am I sharing this short story?

As a pastor and real estate broker, I depend primarily on referrals. They allow me to focus on serving people with trust already built through mutual connections. However, I never want anyone in my congregation to feel I care more about their business than their soul, so I don’t actively pursue church members. Some do ask me questions and have used my help but I try not to cross that line to market to them. Instead, I rely on referrals from friends like you to connect me with people who need a trusted real estate advisor.

Could you help me by connecting me with people who are talking about buying or selling a home or property? I’d be honored if you’d send them my way. I promise you can trust me to help them. Even if they are not looking or located in northwest Ohio, please let me try and help them find a real estate professional in their area who they can trust. By doing so, I can not only interview a potential agent for them but can earn a little from helping connect them to each other. It’s a win for everyone.

Finally, I don’t know if you’ve heard of our Give 5 for Charity program, which has given nearly $400,000 to charities. We donate 5% of every commission earned to a charity of our client’s choice—We’ve given thousands to churches, missions, animal shelters, cancer research, veterans, schools, fire and police departments and more.

Join me for some coffee or a Coke sometime, I’d love to share the whole story with you.
